Yes, it's true. I saw Jeffrey Dahmer at the Grand Avenue Mall the week before Memorial Day weekend in 1991. This was one week before Dahmer claimed one of his youngest victims, 14 year old Konerak Sinthasomphone.
Interestingly, Dahmer would often go to the Grand Avenue Mall to troll for victims. During May, June and July of 1991 Dahmer was on a killing frenzy. In those final 3 months he murdered Matt Turner, 20, Jeremiah Weinberger, 23, Oliver Lacy, 23, and Joseph Bradehoft, 25.
It was a beautiful day. In Wisconsin we didnt get nice warm weather until mid-June. So my friends and I skipped 8th hour to enjoy the spring air and drove 30 minutes north to Milwaukee to the Grand Avenue Mall. Going to Milwaukee was a big deal. It was a huge city compared to my city of approximately 70,000 people, and our mall was definitely not as cool.
We were there for a couple of hours when I saw him lingering over the railing of the 2nd floor balcony. I thought to myself, "Yuck. A creepy dude alone at the mall staring at people. How pathetic." He was wearing a light brown members only-type jacket with these awkward outdated transitioning glasses that had a yellow/brown tint. His hair was a dark dirty blonde. It was flat and feathered.
When we walked underneath the balcony he looked down at us and I yelled to my friends, pointing at him, "Look out! That dude's going to spit on us!" We all walked away laughing.
If you know me personally you know I have a brilliant long term memory. And I never forget a face. Never. Little did i know I would see that face again on July 22, 1991 on live TV.
The rest is history.
